Queensland Pool Safety Basics

If the crowds dissuade you from going to the beach or water park, why don’t you consider having your very own swimming pool? Not only is swimming good fun for the kids and great for your own health, but it also helps increase the value of your residential property. But before you build a pool in your backyard, you should know a thing or two about pool safety.

According to statistics, drowning is one of the common causes of death in Queensland with toddlers and small children being particularly vulnerable. If you have kids that can’t swim, it goes without saying that you will need to watch over them whenever they are in the pool or in the vicinity of your pool area. You are also required by law to build a fence around your pool.

Pool Safety Compliance

The Queensland Building and Construction Commission, or QBCC, is responsible for implementing pool safety rules and compliance in Queensland. If you’re building a pool, make sure that you familiarise yourself with QBCC’s rules and regulations. Once the construction of your pool is complete, you must register it on Queensland’s pool safety register. Failure to comply may cause you to pay a fine of up to $2,356. If you don’t have the time to personally visit QBCC’s office, you can easily register your pool online or call the commission at 139 333 if you have any questions.

Pool Fencing Requirements

Apart from registering your pool, you must also build a fence around it to prevent accidental drownings. However, that you shouldn’t just build any fence around your pool. You must ensure that your pool fencing complies with Queensland standards. It should always be well-maintained and if it sustains any damage it will need to be fixed immediately.

As the saying goes, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” To prevent your swimming pool from becoming a cause of accidents and injuries, it’s a good idea to create a pool safety checklist and tick each item off the list as you complete it.
